CONSIDERING A BEACH WEDDING?

With the beautiful coasts of North and South Carolina, we find many local couples taking off to marry on our regional beaches.

There are many options to getting married on the beach. First, you need to decide the setting. Do you want to be married in an intimate setting, such as a beachside home, or do you envision a grand resort? Whatever suits your style is obviously best. Here are some basics to keep in mind:

-Consider your guest list. Speak to the on-property coordinator about access for all your guests to the location. Will elderly guests be able to reach the location, and if not, will someone be able to provide transportation to the closest drop off point?

-What time is the sun setting at the beach location you've chosen on the day you've chosen? Plan for a ceremony 2 hours prior to sunset so you hit the "golden hour" for photos and can still enjoy a little sunlight for cocktails with guests prior to the reception.

-Ask if the beach you're considering can change during different times of the year. You might fall in love with a beach you visited in November and expect the same experience in July. You might not find out until it’s too late that the same beach is covered with tourists in July and the tide extends much further leaving less beach. So, ask about high season and consider the tide!

-What's your weather back up? I don't just mean a tent. If inclement weather prohibits an outdoor wedding on the beach, what is your indoor back-up plan?

-Does the property/beach you're visiting have something for every one of all ages? If not, keep in mind that you will be playing concierge and will possibly need to extend your budget to include planned activities.

-When you rent a property, such as a beach home, you are able to bring in your own vendors such as caterers, bakers, entertainment, etc. This is not necessarily the case when getting married at a resort. At a resort most everything you need is taken care of through the resort. But don’t assume -- ask!
